Teaching in the Community

11 Apr

For families who take your children with autism to community outings, what strategies, if any, do you find most helpful? Much of my time is spent working in community with children and their families. As you can imagine, we’ve had some successes along with some challenges.  What’s most important though, is that families consistently tell me that they’re encouraged that their children experience some success even if it takes several attempts. The children’s success reinforce our own behavior of continuing the try. So what are some of the strategies for facilitating successful community outings? I’ll talk about some of those in my next post. Please share some of your strategies as well. See you in a few days.

ABA Services

4 Apr

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about offering different services based on ABA. I’m actually kind of doing that already by doing some direct service (e.g. behavior supports/parent training, skill acquisition), school consultation, adjunct teaching, and online RBT training. I really enjoy providing all of these services, especially working with families and teachers. However, I keep wondering how I (we as behavior analysts) can increase our capacity to service children with autism and other disabilities. Although many children with autism are served by behavior analysts in clinical and home settings, the fact is that most children with autism are served/taught in schools. I’m thinking that may be an effective way to provide quality instruction. I’ve recently begun to post content on my website that is targeted toward teachers. I hope to add much more in a manner that can be useful for them in the school settings. See you in a few days.

Workshop preparation

9 Dec

I worked on developing a presentation on self help skills most of the day. I learned some new information while doing the research. I hope to engage the audience by providing some “hands on” activities. I should be done sometime tomorrow. I’ll present some of the information here in later posts.
